World Refuge Day (and James O'Dea)

Helena Noetics List - Hope to see many of you at James O'Dea's lecture tonight and/or the workshop on Saturday. He will also be giving a talk at the Covenant United Methodist Church on Sunday morning at 10:30 am.

While I cannot take the time to publicize much beyond what Helena Noetics is doing, I am forwarding the notice below as I believe this is the first time that World Refugee Day has been honored in Helena. It also fits the social healing/spiritual activist direction that James O'Dea will be addressing. For those of you who do not know about the Tibetan Children's Education Foundation, it is a remarkable organization, now headquartered in Helena, doing Tibetan cultural preservation and humanitarian aid work, primarily in India and Sikkim. Very good people who put on great feasts and other multicultural events in our hometown. I was told there would be apppetizers, and TCEF always has wonderful ethnic fare. Their director, Karma Tensun, is just a remarkable human being, and I am looking foward to hearing his personal story next Tuesday.

Who: Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation

What: Documentary: In search of my home AND discussion/Q&A with Karma Tensum (Executive DIrector of TCEF)

Where: Lewis and Clark Library

When: June 22nd @ 5:30

Why: in honor of World Refugee Day

World Refugee Day is a day to recognize and honor the plight of the more than 40 million refugees throughout the global community who have been uprooted and relocated due to their race, religion, nationality, social group, or political opinion.  Created by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the agency mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide, World Refugee Day has turned into an international movement with communities around the world coming together to show their support and pledge their help.  From Washington D.C., to New Delhi, India, to Shilong, China, people around the world are drawing attention to this critical refugee issue.

Helena, Montana is no exception.  On June 22nd the Tibetan Children’s Education Foundation (TCEF) is sponsoring a community event at the Lewis and Clark Library at 5:30 in honor of World Refugee Day, focusing primarily on the theme of 2010 World Refugee Day, “They took my home, but they can’t take my future”. There will be a screening of “In Search of My Home”, a documentary that captures the hardships and heartache of two refugee families from Afghanistan and Burma who have been forced to find a new home and a new life in India.  After the screening, Karma Tensum, the Executive Director of the TCEF, will share his experience being a Tibetan refugee.  There will be a question and answer period afterwards to give the audience a chance to engage with Karma and his experience, and to learn what it would be like to be forced to find a new home and create a new life, the theme of 2010 World Refugee Day.  This event is a way for the Helena community to gain awareness, donate funds, and gather support for both refugees around the world and the UNHCR’s urgent work.

Best,

Aimee
